I know very little about Sofia, actually. Only that she worked and could make a living in San Fransisco, by ironing shirts at a laundry shop. She travelled very far west, and returned to Finland. How could she afford the tickets? She must anyhow have been a very brave and adventurous woman, much like her sister Anna Kempe, who travelled in an other direction, to India, where she worked as a missionary. I have written a book about Anna Kempe and doing research about Anna Kempe and her siblings I thought that Sofia also had such an interesting life, she could very well be the main carachter or topic of another book.
Anna Kempe (who was in India as missionary) had a sister, Sofia, who in her lifetime travelled to San Fransisco and lived there, in early 1900. She survived an earthquaqe, returned to Finland, when she was around 70 years. The two sisters shared here a cottage as retired.
